Godiva, Bookfest, Parties etc.

It’s been a busy weekend. After a very enjoyable reading and ‘meet the authors’ event in Wood Green on Thursday at the fabulous Big Green Bookshop (so good to see lit lovers taking risks to engage their customers – thanks Simon you are a legend) the weekend continued with the annual World Music feast that is Godiva Festival.

Godiva is a real mixed bag to be honest. It’s a free urban festival and consequently attracts 70,000 of Coventry’s finest. However it also attracts the ‘no frills’ and ‘basics’ ranges too. Kind of old-style brew crew meets aggro youth. Bless. However I witnessed only one police-youth run-in and it was under control very quickly.

The music was awesome in the Rhythm Tent. Seckou Keita and his band of consummate musicians did not disappoint. But the surprise band on the night was Freefall Collective – kick-ass dance music, with a real edgy and energetic vibe – it was impossible to not dance. Dreadzone for the noughties but better-looking. Go and see them wherever they are playing.

I went to a friend’s party on Sunday and yesterday evening I did a reading with Amanda Smyth (another Leamingtonian) at the Oxfam Bookshop as part of the Oxfam Bookfest programme. It was standing room only on the night! Not bad for a provincial book reading, but then Amanda and I were playing to a home crowd. However Marian, the proprietor, and another dedicated bibliophile, put huge efforts into making the evening a success.

Now I am tired and ready for my week writing in Wales. Tomorrow.
